In the Hungarian-populated area of Slovakia, in the Rožňava district, near the Szádelő Gorge, Andrássy Mausoleum, and Krásznahorka Castle, in the village of Kováčová, the Kováčová watermill is located.
The watermill is located in the valley of the Csermosnya stream, next to the karst mountains and rocks, and once belonged to the Andrássy family from Krasznahorka. Today it is a unique monument. The mill building was out of use for 50 years. Fortunately, the original technical equipment and machines needed for grinding flour have survived and can be viewed. In the four-story mill, you can learn how flour was once made and learn the story of the last miller and his family, who lived and worked here before nationalization in 1950. The exhibition presents the tools used in Gömör, as well as former folk crafts such as pottery, ceramics, wicker and wire products, and embroidery. Next to the mill is the 30-meter-long oak mill channel, the five-meter-diameter working upside-down water wheel, and the hemp crusher (only found in our region in the highlands), which made the everyday work of the people of this Hungarian region easier. The hemp crusher is accompanied by our exhibition entitled “Folk Processing of Hemp”, which is located in a separate room. Here you can learn about the exact steps of folk processing of hemp, the tools used to make fabric from hemp fiber.
